What does GSM mean and what does it mean for your envelope buying? We have the complete GSM guide for you today!

GSM is an acronym meaning ‘Grams per Square Metre’ So this translates into how much a single sheet of paper measuring 1m x 1m weighs. Effectively the higher the GSM number, the heavier the paper.

What difference does GSM make for your envelope?

GSM affects the quality and durability of your envelope. If your envelopes were of a thickness of say 35-55gsm which is what most newspapers will commonly be printed on, you would find most of your post would never reach its destination! 33-55gsm is far to thin for use in the envelope trade and like newspapers would tear very easily. However if you used a thickness of 400 gsm this would be the typical thickness of card and would be far thicker than would be needed for everyday postal needs.

Now there are certain GSM ratings which will keep popping up when looking round large number of envelope suppliers, such as www.expressenvelopes.co.uk. Most envelopes will fall into these categories.

• 70gsm to 80gsm
  
  These envelopes will be the cheapest available, however due to the thiness of the envelope they are not suitable for large amounts of content.

• 90gsm to 100gsm
  
  This GSM range covers the paper thickness of the average envelope. Envelopes with this GSM is sturdy enough to withstand a bit of wear and tear.

• 110gsm to 130gsm

  This is the thickness of our premium envelope range. You can feel the difference in your hand when you pick up the envelope which will make your mail stand out. This thickness also includes our  tear resistant envelopes which are highly durable and reliable. 
   

• 140gsm to 180gsm
